The
Formosan Barking Deer (Reeve’s muntjac/muntiacus
reevesi/ )
live in the mountain forests under 3000m, and grow to
less than a meter high. Its characteristic, high-pitched,
‘bark’ is not unlike the domestic dog –
thus the name.
Some years ago a group
of us, lost deep in the mountains, were saved (well…that’s
what we have concluded) by following the tracks of this
delightful dwarfy herbivore.
Cute animals....and tasty
too! But please, if you are hungry, ensure the meat comes
via a farm not a nature reserve. Available at Hudlavoos,
Tainan’s excellent aboriginal bar, and its partner,
Hudlanoom restaurant/coffee shop.
Our four-legged friends are pleased to know that we two-legged
beasts have off-set our carbon footprint through participation
in a local reforestation program.
